PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Filmmaker Yance Ford was in a “Sundance haze” when he took a meeting with Netflix following the premiere of “Strong Island” in 2017. “Strong Island” would go on to get an Oscar nomination, too, as would its Sundance and Netflix peer “Icarus,” which would win best documentary in 2018. “Netflix understood what ‘Strong Island’ was doing and what it could say to a big, broad audience.”Ten years after “The Square,” an acquisition that put Netflix documentaries on the map, the streamer is back at the 40th Sundance Film Festival with an eye towards acquisitions and two very different originals. “We really were the new kids on the block trying to persuade filmmakers that having the reach of the platform was something that was really important,” Del Deo said. “I think it's going to put a lot of smiles on people,” Del Deo said.

CNN —Artist Salvatore Del Deo and his family are back in the dune shack they’ve occupied and cared for on Cape Cod National Seashore for nearly 80 years. It’s officially known as the Chanel Shack after its original owner, Jeanne “Frenchie” Chanel. A collection of dune shacks make up the Peaked Hill Bars Historic District, where the Chanel Shack is located. The Chanel Shack wasn’t among those for lease, but it could have been part of a future offering. The original Chanel shack dates back to 1942, and Salvatore Del Deo befriended the original owner, “Frenchie” Chanel, several years later.

Among those inspired by the solitude and natural wonder they found there were the playwrights Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams, painters Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, novelists Jack Kerouac and Norman Mailer and poets E.E. “A grand place to be alone and undisturbed,” O’Neill once said of his hideaway there. “I’m ashamed that the Park Service would try to capitalize on it, without realizing the point of the shacks was to get away from civilization, from capitalism.”The Park Service set no limit on financial offers from bidders. The structures’ use must be private and residential, not commercial; modern upgrades are not allowed, and lease holders will bear the full costs of their upkeep. The agency declined to say how many bids were submitted by the July deadline, or when it will notify the winners.

CNN —Salvatore Del Deo is a 94-year-old artist and Korean War Veteran who has made a dune shack in Provincetown, Massachusetts, his part-time home for the past 77 years. Salvatore received an eviction notice from the National Park Service in March. Frenchie's Shack Tatianna Del DeoThe eviction notice came as a shock to the Del Deo family, said Romolo Del Deo, Salvatore’s son. Dune shacks for leaseThe eviction notice came shortly before the National Park Service announced a leasing program for eight other dune shacks. The transfer of the property to the Del Deo family has not been acknowledged by the park service, Romolo said.
